Free Tax Assistance Program Back Through April 9

Free AARP tax assistance has returned to the Putnam County Library to help with getting your returns ready.

Volunteer Tax Expert Dee Putochnik said though the program is supported by AARP, but the program assists people of all ages with filing taxes. Putochnik said the program has been so popular that other tax experts send people who cannot afford to have their taxes done to the program.

“A lot of people are actually I guess you could say they are a little afraid to have their taxes done with the IRS,” Putochnik said. “I think it’s just that they don’t understand it but we have people that come back to us every year that we get to know.”

Putochnik said people need to bring all necessary tax documents, photo ID, social security card, and last year’s taxes. Putochnik said broker statements are not mailed out until March and that if you are to receive a broker statement it would be best to wait till you have the statement before receiving assistance.

Putochnik said the program is slightly different and maybe even better than a normal tax expert because the program has a quality control team to ensure the taxes are being filed correctly.

“Like if I’m going to prepare your taxes and when I get done with it we send you over to a quality reviewer and they go through everything that I’ve done,” Putochnik said. “So you have a double system there and then we e-file immediately so we kind of have extra security that everything is done correctly.”

Putochnik said the program is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am-2:30pm. Assistance will be provided until April 9. Putchnik said there are no signups or appointments needed, as the program is first come first serve.
