EMA Director: Prepare For Power Outages, Trees Down

Wind gusts in excess of 50mph possible across the Upper Cumberland Tuesday as a strong low-level jet stream moves across the region.

Overton County EMA Director Chris Masiongale said residents should prepare for power outages during Tuesday and Tuesday night. Masiongale said large vehicles like buses or semi-trucks are all at risk of being affected.

“If you’re driving, keep both hands on the wheel and go a little bit slower,” Masiongale said. “Remember that your large open areas like crossing bridges are very susceptible to a lot of the high wind coming through and causing you to possibly lose control.”

A Wind Advisory is in effect. The National Weather Service forecasts southern winds to strengthen and winds from the jet stream will also mix down.

Masiongale said people should make sure any outdoor items such as furniture and umbrellas are put away or kept inside during the high winds. Masiongale said areas with lower elevation that see lots of standing water are more susceptible to having trees blown over, but the ground is still wet across the region.

“It’s mother nature and mother nature tends to like to show us how she is still in control,” Masiongale said. “But mainly it’s the trees, that’s the big thing, and then the driving. That’s your two big items to be aware of.”

Masiongale said people should keep nonperishable food and bottled water or other drinks on hand in case the power goes out. Masiongale said important batteries should be charged and generators should be refueled and exercised before the wind advisory to make sure they are working properly.

“If you have a refrigerator or a freezer and the power goes out, don’t open it any more than you have to,” Masiongale said. “It’s usually good for several hours until the power comes back on.”

Masiongale said people should call their local power company and report an outage as soon as it happens. Masiongale said many companies have automated system to detect and report outages but additional confirmation and information from customers is tremendously helpful.

“If you’re oxygen-dependent, be sure and have extra oxygen available,” Masiongale said . “Most of these oxygen companies do that. They’ll supply the patient with extra bottles just in case of power outages.”

Masiongale said the wind advisory is set to last from 12:00pm on Tuesday to 6:00pm on Wednesday.
