Sparta Aldermen approved an addition to the city ordinance Thursday night, adding a commercial landfill rate fee.
The change necessary because the county sold the landfill last year. City Administrator Tonya Tindle said previously the county charged customers, while the city collected the trash and dumped it at the landfill.
“It will not be an increase for the commercial customers because they will no longer get a bill from the county, but the bill they had from the county will go on our electric bill,” Tindle said. “And the county has drafted a letter and sent it to all of their commercial customers explaining this to them.”
Tindle said the county did not charge the city from dropping trash in the landfill, but the new owner does. The county agreed to allow the city to collect the money.
The change will go into effect April 1, via utility bills.
In other business, The Aldermen selected Brian England to take over as Office Manager for Sparta Electric. He has spent more than 25 years working for the city.
“I think it’s good policy for us to continue to promote from within if we can,” Mayor Jerry Lowery said. “I think that’s just healthy for our people.”
Aldermen revised the personnel policy in regards to personal days. The city will also purchase a new truck for Public Works.
