The White County American Legion is seeking financial assistance to help repair a portion of its building.
American Legion Post 99 Judge Advocate Roger Frazer said several years ago the post built an attached building so an elevator could be implemented. Frazer said the addition’s foundation is starting to lean and separate from the rest of the building.
“We’ve got it secured at the present time and we have had two companies come out to look at that and look at some possible solutions to direct it,” Frazer said. “It’s still usable at this present time, but we are concerned about it settling sometime in the future.”
Frazer said engineers estimated the cost to repair the building to be around $30,000. Frazer said the American Legion is currently reaching out to the county to see if Commissioners would be willing to help pay for the needed repairs.
“We are hoping to get some financial assistance, period,” Frazer said. “We don’t have the sufficient funds to make that kind of an expense.”
Frazer said the elevator portion is an important piece of the building. Frazer said due to the age and condition of many veterans, it would be very difficult for them to use the stairs to get to the second level of the building.
“Many veterans have wheelchair usage and or crutches and or canes to make that climb up the stairways,” Frazer said. “Pretty much impossible for several of them.”
Frazer said the meeting room is on the second level of the building. Frazer said there is not enough room on the first floor to have meetings and prevent people from using the elevator or the stairs. Frazer said he hopes to get the building repaired as soon as possible.
