Avery Trace Middle School’s new softball field is complete but will not see much use until fall.
Head Softball Coach Courtney Savage said the team has to wait until next season to use the field for games because lights still need to be installed. Savage said the field will give the team the competitive edge that comes with a home field advantage.
“It allows us to just be more used to the field that we’re on so it’s just a more familiar space,” Savage said. “So it just allows us to be more comfortable with where we’re at and having access to a better facility and something that’s our own allows us to be more comfortable.”
Savage said the infield is ready for use but players have to stay out of the outfield as the grass is still growing. Savage said the new field will make things easier for families as they will not have to transport players to the Jere Whitson Ball Fields for practices and games.
“I’m extremely excited, especially for these girls, ’cause some of these girls have not had a field to play on that was their own,” Savage said.
Savage said the team is still practicing at the Jere Whitson fields for the time being. Savage said the outfield should at least be ready for practice by next fall.
“Really as a coach, from that standpoint I’m just excited for these girls to be able to play,” Savage said. “And of course I’m excited for myself as well, but especially these girls.”
