The Overton County Commission approved a bid Monday night for some $52,000 to repair the exterior wall of the Millard Oakley County Services Building.
County Executive Steven Barlow said a bucket truck damaged the wall on the side of the building last year. Barlow told the commissioners at Monday night’s meeting that the repairs will be paid for by the insurance company of the person who hit the building.
“It’s just external damage, just a crack in the wall, other than it just looked bad,” Barlow said. “There wasn’t really anything that we could do to repair it or anything. It’s a piece of rock. But good news is we’re fixing to have it fixed and the eyesore will be going away.”
Barlow said it took almost a year to find someone who could do the job because the original architect retired and most other local companies are not equipped to repair stone like this. Barlow said the masonry company will have to replace most of the wall where the damage was done to properly restore it.
“With the architect and the contractor we (were) able to find one person that could do it and it took a while to find that person,” Barlow said. “But it took all three of us to get our heads together to see if we could match the stone, what we would have to do.”
Barlow said the county can get on the company’s schedule now that the bid is approved. Barlow said he hopes to have the repairs all done by this summer.
“They’re actually over at TCAT building a building over there for them,” Barlow said. “So it just depends on what part of the schedule we can get on.”
Barlow said the construction should not have a major impact on the building’s operations as work will be done on the side of the building where there are only a few parking spots anyways.
In other business, the commission approved a motion to sell four vehicles from the sheriff’s department as surplus items. Commissioners also approved a motion to add Craftsman Drive as a road for emergency purposes only.
