Cookeville Leisure Services reminding residents that dogs need to be on a leash when out in public.
Cookeville Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said Leisure Services sent out the ordinance reminder due to a recent issue.
“We see dogs that are running loose from time to time in various parks,” Wood said. “And it’s important for the safety of the animals, for the safety of the other patrons that are using parks to keep those dogs on the leash.”
Woods said dogs can be unpredictable in unfamiliar environments. Woods said that those who want their dog to enjoy space can go to the Cane Creek Dog Park.
“We have one dog park at Cane Creek Park,” Woods said. “It’s very nice. It has a small dog area and a large dog area, so it’s a place that you can take and let your dogs run off leash.”
Woods said failure to follow the ordinance could result in a citation. Woods said the city is hoping not to have to strictly enforce the ordinance.
“We don’t have people out there watching every move at any of our parks,” Woods said. “We can’t possibly have that. So we are asking people to willingly go along with it.”
