Monterey officially unveiled the newly named Nathan Walker Sports Complex Tuesday night.
The Whitaker Street sports complex named for Walker, who passed away in 2022 after serving six years as the town’s mayor. Nathan’s Mother, June Walker, said she is humbled and honored to have the complex named after her son.
“I can’t begin to thank you enough for showing this kind of kindness and this honor to him,” June Walker said. “I know he is looking down on us, and he is very pleased because that was his dream to get that soccer field finished.”
June Walker said she hopes Nathan will be remembered for his love for Monterey and his kindness. June Walker said her son loved the town.
“It was a place he saw he could do some good, and he had so much to give, and Monterey was so accepting of his personality and his desires,” June Walker said. “It just, it was like a marriage. I mean, he just, he and Lori both just said they belong here.”
June Walker said that Nathan told her he kept every promise to Monterey, except that he had not finished the soccer fields at the complex. She said she joked with Nathan that the town would finish the soccer fields and name the complex after him.
Monterey Mayor Alex Garcia said he is glad he could get Nathan’s mission across the finish line.
“I think that this started a couple of years ago with Nathan, and we finished it this year, and actually it will be finished at the end of the year with new lights,” Garcia said. “But it was a no-brainer to name it after him cause it was something he was very passionate about and something that he really wanted to see.”
Garcia said the town expects to start a lighting project for the soccer field at the end of August.
