Van Buren Commissioners Confronted On Metro Rumor

A Van Buren County resident asked the Van Buren County Commission if the county is discussing the formation of a metro government combining the county and the city of Spencer.

The resident said Spencer Mayor Alisa Farmer has made multiple Facebook posts about the county considering the action.

When asked if the county would be pursuing a metro government, Commissioner Tabitha Denney said there would be no action during the meeting.

Denney did not deny talks on the issue.

Denney also said there were petitions that have gone around that people have signed.

In a recent Facebook post, Farmer criticized the county commission for how they are attempting to form a metro government without providing information to the public.

“This post isn’t whether or not I am in support or against metro government,” Farmer said. “This post is to make sure the public is aware of what these elected officials are doing. Again, not once has any meeting been held to publicly discuss the pros and cons of metro government with city officials nor the general public, and a reason given as to the county’s reasoning in taking this course.”
