Cali Franklin, York Set Sights on Fifth Straight State Trip

As the York Dragonettes prepare for another postseason push, the standard has not changed, and neither has the expectation.

With four consecutive trips to the state tournament already secured, York now sets its sights on a fifth straight appearance in Murfreesboro. Leading that charge is senior point guard Cali Franklin, who said she understands both the weight of the moment and the urgency of the opportunity.

After months of battling around the Upper Cumberland, Franklin said her message is clear: talent alone will not carry the Dragonettes back to championship weekend.

“I think man [defense], we’re really good off the dribble and so we’re fast, some of us,” Franklin said. “That’s the biggest thing is that we’re good off the dribble, but like the zone we panic, don’t know what to do when we get stopped.”

Franklin, a four-year contributor and steady presence in the backcourt, has grown into both a floor general and a vocal leader. Franklin is part of a senior class determined to make its final run count. York enters the postseason with four seniors anchoring the roster, players who have experienced both the thrill of state tournament victories and the sting of coming up just short.

Last season, the Dragonettes battled their way to the Class AA state championship game before falling just shy of the title. Franklin said that time serves as fuel rather than frustration.

“I think you can play three quarters good but it comes down to the last quarter and how hard you play, what team wants it most,” Franklin said.

Franklin said that edge, finishing games with toughness and composure, is now a daily point of emphasis. Franklin said she knows postseason basketball is rarely decided by highlight plays. It is about discipline against zone defenses, valuing possessions, and responding when momentum swings.

As one of four seniors, she also carries a deeper perspective. The postseason runs, the bus rides, the packed student sections, they pass quicker than expected.

“I just want to enjoy every moment,” Franklin said. “It goes by really fast, we’ve seen that in the past three years, but just enjoying every moment with them, making the most of our time on the floor, off the floor.”

Franklin said that balance, urgency and appreciation, defines this year’s Dragonettes, with the goal made clear: Extend the streak to five straight state appearances and take one more shot at a gold ball.
