Cumberland County Girls Tennis Looking Past Overall Record

The Cumberland County Lady Jets tennis team has seen tests on and off the court.

The Lady Jets did not have enough players this season to field a full team. Cumberland Girls Tennis Head Coach David Walker said he looks beyond the wins and losses this season.

“Our goal going into a match is for each individual to do the best that they can and to teach double attention the best they can and to see improvement over the last match,” Walker said. “And by that metric, I think we did amazingly.”

Walker said a lot of the girls played their first season of competitive tennis last season. Walker said he could not be happier with how the season went.

“Putting the win-loss record aside, I was really happy with the way all the girls played this year,” Walker said.

Walker said he coached the team the same despite the adjustments they had to make.

“Knowing the overall match can’t be won, we count it as the matches that we play, are we going to beat the players that we meet,” Walker said. “It’s a mental outlook of going to compete with what we have, and winning the mental game as well as the physical game.”

The past season saw Molly Neal make the district semifinals as a singles competitor. Cumberland County will move a class down next season.
