School Zone Speeding, Distractions Common Mistakes

With the start of the school year, Livingston Police Chief Ray Smith said it is important to emphasize safe driving through school zones.

Smith said during the first week of school, kids are usually excited to meet new friends and teachers. That can mean they are not paying attention. Smith said one of the most common mistakes drivers make when driving through a school zone is speeding.

“A lot of times, a parent may be delivering two children to two different schools, so, and a common thing is to be in a hurry or run a little late,” Smith said. “I encourage each one to leave a little early and give themself some time because there is gonna be a backup because everything is new.”

Smith said most marked school zones have a speed limit of 15 miles per hour. Smith said speeding in a school zone can lead up to $200 fine.

Smith said that oftentimes people get distracted while sitting and waiting to pick up their child from school.

“They are just looking for their child and sometimes they get distracted in that situation and not paying as close of attention as they need to,” Smith said. “But they need to just take time, be very vigilant around their vehicle, and around the people they are sitting at. be around and be vigilant of school traffic itself.”

Smith said it can be difficult to focus with rowdy children. Smith said parents should go over a plan with their child ahead of time to ensure safety.

“I think to go over that with them that they ned to come to a full stop, that way nobody does get distracted and things work a little smoother,” Smith said. “Also, be aware of where the school would like for them to pick up and drop off at, would be some great knowledge.”

Smith said school systems have done a better job of developing safer pick-up and drop-off systems. Smith said he looks forward to having a great and safe school year.
