Cumberland County Jets basketball player Triston Futrell is coming off a historic year.
Futrell was named Freshman of the Year in the district last season. Futrell said the award meant all the work he put in translated into every game. Futrell said Head Coach Christian Goodwin gave him some words of advice early on.
“I think at first I was struggling, I was getting in my head and stuff,” Futrell said. “He said, don’t even think about it, just go out there and play. And he says that more and more and I actually know when he’s starting to mean it, starting to ring a bell.”
Futrell heads into his sophomore year for the Jets. Futrell will be in his second season alongside Coach Goodwin. Futrell said Coach Goodwin has been a big positive in his game.
“He’s helped me a lot,” Futrell said. “He’s given me opportunities, he’s helped me with stuff [if] I needed it, and he’s been really helpful as a coach.”
Futrell said it was harder understanding the concepts at first.
“It was a rough summer but when I started getting the hang of stuff, it went pretty easily,” Futrell said.
Futrell started the majority of games for the Jets last season. He is expected to start at guard heading into next season. Futrell said he expects his team to match up well against everyone in the Upper Cumberland.
Cumberland County was eliminated in the second round of the district tournament last season.
