Warren County quarterback Brady Swallows said he intends to play and excel at one position this season.
Swallows only plays quarterback for the Pioneers. He has taken only one snap of defense in middle school as a linebacker. Swallows said playing strictly quarterback gives him an advantage during games.
“When we’re focusing, varsity, on the defensive side of the ball, I feel like I can help some of the younger kids on the offensive side of the ball with the experience,” Swallows said. “When we’re on offense, I feel like I can, I’ve prepared myself offensively to go into it. Obviously, in games it’s nice being able to have a break on the sidelines when the defense is in, being able to look down at our iPads and watch what the defense is doing.”
Swallows took over as starting quarterback his sophomore year. Swallows said those games he played early on proved instrumental in developing his play.
“The chance that I had to start as a sophomore was huge, especially those big name teams we were playing,” Swallows said. “Going into this season, playing some smaller schools with experience the past two years, playing against bigger schools, I think that’s really going to help me and that experience is invaluable.”
The Pioneers football team will compete in the independent division this season. Warren County has played against more populated schools in scrimmages leading up to opening night on August 22nd. Swallows said talking to a coaching staff that can help him develop quickly gives him confidence.
“I’m really proud of everyone picking [the new offense] up so far,” Swallows said. “I think the coaches have been doing an excellent job of getting everyone up to speed and helping us get to the level that we want to be at. I’m really excited about the opportunity we have in the new offense.”
Swallows said his dad helps break down film with him. Swallows’ dad played football both at the college and professional level. Swallows said the time he spends studying film with his dad remains a source of pride for the Swallows family.
