Tennessee Tech graduate Meredith Nye will represent the Ohio Valley Conference for the NCAA Woman of the Year.
Nye was selected for the Dean’s List for the eighth time and the honor roll for the ninth time. Nye said her first reaction after hearing about her nomination was one of gratefulness.
“This nomination kind of goes hand in hand with the nomination that I’ve been able to receive after graduating,” Nye said. “Those kind of encompass a lot of the hard work that I put in towards the end of my college career.”
Nye played on the Golden Eagles soccer team during her four years at Tennessee Tech. Nye became the first student-athlete to receive All-OVC honors five times while on the team. Nye said college athletics create an amazing environment.
“I think there’s no better place that has these teammate relationships,” Nye said. “Like you are suffering together at times because of all the hard work that it takes. You’re spending so much time together and it’s hard to find that in any other area other than on a sports team.”
Nye also earned multiple scholarships in engineering while tutoring at Tennessee Tech. Nye said the last few months for her appeared as surprising.
“When you graduate and when you kind of leave the world of college athletics, you’ve accepted that your time has passed and it’s time to pass the torch onto your teammates,” Nye said. “You don’t really have any expectations to be awarded or honored anything after that.”
Nye currently works as an engineer in Huntington. Nye celebrated her marriage recently and will study in London for the next year. Nye hopes to earn her masters in rehabilitation engineering and assisted technologies.
