New Pickett County Coach Cody Muse will be taking on at least two new roles when the season opens Friday: defense and head coach.
Muse served as offensive coordinator last year and has only coached offense in his career. Muse also coached at skill positions he had not coached before. Muse said the transition into coaching new positions this season has gone smoothly so far.
“I’ve had a lot of mentors that I can to kind of call and lean on,” Muse said. “Anytime I’ve had moments of conflict or moment of just needing somebody to kind of bounce ideas off of about what to do, what not to do, things like that.”
Muse said he coached and became familiar with Pickett’s offensive line before taking over the new positions last season. Muse will return to coaching the offensive line exclusively this season, alongside his new head coaching duties. Muse said he hopes to possess one key trait as head coach of the Bobcats.
“You got to learn to be adaptable,” Muse said. “This is a really unique situation.”
Muse said some days he will show up to practice as the only coach available. Muse said he tries to teach the Bobcats key fundamentals during those days.
“A lot of it is more, let’s talk basics, let’s talk football 101, let’s understand the situation, be it, sometimes it’s as simple as going over a punt and reminding them when the ball is in air [how to play it,]” Muse said. “I’m fortunate the guys that are on staff, they’re here more often than not. It’s having to be on your toes with every group.”
Muse enters coaching the Bobcats as the only full time teacher on Pickett County’s high school staff.
