Monterey Considering Dog Park, Aldermen To Vote Soon

Monterey will consider installing a potential dog park across from Whitaker Park.

An initial design shows a small dog area and a separate large dog area that would include some agility obstacles. Mayor Alex Garcia said many residents have expressed a desire for a dog park.

“You know, if you go to these other cities, I mean, Cookeville has got one, Crossville has got one,” Garcia said. “You know, it’s just a place to take your dog that’s a safe environment for them. And you know, it’s just the up-and-coming thing, I guess.”

Garcia said nothing is official yet, and approval is still to come. Garcia said he hopes the dog park does happen.

“I think it will add to our facilities and our community,” Garcia said. “And you know, just like the rail trial, just like the park, just like all of our fields, Nathan Walker, it’s just something else that we can give our community.”

Garcia said a cost estimate for the dog park would be less than $20,000. Garcia said the town would use leftover grant funds to pay for the dog park.

“We got an appropriation from the state to put lights at the Nathan Walker Field,” Garcia said. “We were able to get the lights cheaper than expected, and then we had some funds leftover. So we are also putting some irrigation at that field with the funds that are leftover, and I think we have enough funds leftover to go ahead and put up this dog park.”

Garcia said the area is where the town designated for the park would be in the area of a planned stormwater project. Garcia said that project would have to be completed before the dog park could be installed.
