York Dragonettes Volleyball Head Coach Shayne Monday began coaching his sixth different team across multiple different schools.
Monday began coaching elementary basketball through middle school assistant. Monday went to Clarkrange and became an assistant for girls basketball head coach Lamar Rogers, along with becoming head coach of the Buffaloes baseball team. Monday then traveled over to York and became an assistant coach for Derwin Wright and the Drgaons football team, while also helping as an assistant coach for the softball program. Monday said he enjoys coaching student athletes above all else.
“In the Upper Cumberland, there are some very, very good volleyball head coaches and I’ve talked to many of them,” Monday said. “They’ve helped me, gave me ideas, gave me drills, just different things like that, so learning the game from others is a great thing.”
Monday enters his second year coaching the York volleyball team. He will transition over to assistant coach when the boys basketball season begins under head coach Rodney Pile. Monday said he had to approach volleyball differently than the other sports he has coached.
“Volleyball’s a new sport to me,” Monday said. “I’ve had to really try to learn the game and the different aspects of it volleyball, I’ve enjoyed it, I really do.”
Monday said he boils down coaching to one key trait.
“It comes down to your discipline, comes down to how you practice,” Monday said. “Each sport has that in common, your attitude toward the game, your love for it, the passion, so I think that’s really helped me.”
Monday enters his 36th year of teaching. He has coached every year he has taught across all schools.
