Upperman Bees quarterback Bronzden Chaffin started his football career playing other skill positions.
Chaffin has played three positions on offense throughout his career. He enters his fourth season playing quarterback on the varsity team. Chaffin said he made the switch to quarterback at an early age.
“Whenever I was younger and played in youth league, I played in running back,” Chaffin said. “And then seventh grade year, I played receiver and then eighth grade year is when I switched to quarterback.”
Chaffin ran for over 500 yards while playing running back. He racked up over 500 yards the next season playing receiver. Chaffin said his early experience at those positions helps shape the way he sees the field today.
“Running back definitely helped my field vision being able to just make plays and know where to go, cutbacks,” Chaffin said. “Receiver helped me be able to judge to know what my receivers are gonna do and how to play the ball and run the route.”
Chaffin said those experiences also help when it comes to building chemistry.
“I got a good connection with my receivers and running backs,” Chaffin said. “Just being able to talk it up and see what they can do better, if they can break quicker, get their head around quicker, running back can give a second to catch the ball, to take the hand-off, that helps a lot.”
Over his last 15 starts, Chaffin has thrown for more than 1500 yards and 15 passing touchdowns with a completion percentage of 70 percent. Chaffin has rushed the ball for nearly a thousand yards during that time, adding 16 rushing touchdowns. Upperman has gone 13-2 during that stretch.
