More than 700 American Flags, each honoring a military veteran, will take over Garrison Field in Crossville next month for the Field of Honor.
This marks the fourth year the Lake Tansi Exchange Club has presented the remembrance event. Jean Smith coordinates the event which also serves as a fund raiser to assist vehicles.
“The biggest organization that we have contributed money to is CCVAC, it’s the Cumberland County Veteran’s Assistance Council,” Smith said. “And they kind of oversee all the veterans in the county and any veteran that has trouble paying their rent, has a tough time affording groceries that month, or paying their electric bill, they can apply to CCVAC and they will help, you know, take care of these veteran’s needs.”
The event raises more than $30,000. Flags will be available for purchase at the event, and cost $35.00. Smith says anyone can purchase a flag honoring a Veteran, and emphasizes that the flags are not just for Cumberland County Veterans.
The Field of Honor returns November 8. That day will feature Cumberland County’s Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Crossville at 10am. The Military Museum will be open to the public. The event’s official opening ceremony program will also take place. It features local veterans, city and county officials, and local school children.
In addition to the flags, commemorative coins honoring the military will be available for purchase.
“On the back side of the coin is an actual picture of the Field of Honor at Garrison Park and then on the front side of the coin its the 250th anniversary to the Marines, the Navy, and the Army,” Smith said.
