Putnam Starts Transition For New Solid Waste Director

Putnam County’s New Solid Waste Director, Brian Reed, is settling into his new role as he works alongside the current Solid Waste Director.

Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said Reed started transitioning into the role over the last two weeks. Porter said Reed’s experience has made the transition easy.

“He basically grew up in construction and recycling, and solid waste, so he had a lot of years of experience that he brought to the table,” Porter said.

Doug Ashburn has served as Putnam County’s solid waste director for the last 30 years. Porter said hiring Reed was crucial as the county needed someone who could take over before Ashburn retires next June.

“Every department has a director, but they also have an assistant director that is being trained and worked with, that if something ever happens to the director, that they would step up,” Porter said. “Unfortunately, with Doug, his assistant director is also gonna retire. So they are both retiring, and we needed someone with a lot of experience and who knew what they were doing, and Brian brought that to the table.”

Porter said he is hoping the Solid Waste Department will continue on a good track.

“We are just looking to continually improve our processes and the department when it comes to the solid waste and the landfill, and everything that we operate,” Porter said.
