New Jackson County Bowler Highland Finding Confidence

Jackson County bowler Daneisha Highland elevated a recreational past time with friends to a competitive challenge facing opponents.

Joining the Jackson County Blue Devils after the team lost several players last season, Highland quickly embraced the sport and has been making steady improvements on the lanes.

“[The teammates are] all really helpful,” Highland said. “I definitely learned a lot being there and I definitely improved, you can see it in my scores, and it’s just a nice environment.”

Highland started competitively bowling this October, initially struggling with scores under 100. Through practice and guidance from head coach Debbie Akers, she has improved to a 126 in her most recent matchup.

“I’ve been really working on my follow through, how I roll it,” Highland said. “When you like cross your body, it definitely goes into the gutter but if you throw your arm out it’ll go into the gutter. You want to [bowl it] straight.”

Highland said she has embraced the challenge of trying to do her best at a new sport.

“Obviously, your goal is to always win and try your best,” Highland said. “But it’s a game and it’s really fun.”

Highland said the support of junior teammate Lakeland Stephens and Coach Akers helped her make the transition from casual bowling at birthday parties to competitive play. Highland said she hopes to continue improving her personal scores and help the Blue Devils post stronger team results. Her goal for the season is to break 140 in her first year.

“I look forward to the rest of the season,” Highland said. “I hope it’s a great time.”
