Golden Eagles’ Historic Season Sets Stage for New Era

The rise of Tennessee Tech football has become unmistakable this season. The Golden Eagles, under second-year head coach Bobby Wilder and newly hired athletic director Casey Fox, have delivered the most successful regular season in program history: An 11-1 campaign capped by an undefeated 8-0 run through the Ohio Valley Conference.

That surge has thrust Tennessee Tech back into the FCS Playoffs for only the second time ever and the first time since 2011. Fox said the moment is bigger than a milestone: The moment is becoming a launching pad.

“Getting to host somebody from the Missouri Valley is always exciting,” Fox said. “You always want to try to challenge yourself and this will allow us to kind of see where we stand, if we can continue and if we can get a win and advance.”

The historic season has already rewritten program marks. The 11 victories set a new Tennessee Tech record. Fox said he believes the deeper significance lies in establishing a standard for the future.

“Any time you get to play in the FCS playoffs, it’s a great accomplishment and great achievement for our team,” Fox said. “Hopefully it signals the ascension of our program and what we want to become.”

That ascension arrives at a time of transformation for the entire athletic department. Tech is preparing to shift conferences in 2026, moving from the Ohio Valley Conference, its home since 1949, to the Southern Conference. The university is also in the midst of major facilities upgrades, including a new west-side stadium project set to open next year. Fox said these changes align with a broader vision: Building an athletics culture capable of competing at the highest tiers of the FCS.

“Getting to do this hopefully becomes more of a regular occurrence,” Fox said. “We want to be a program that has expectations to go to the playoffs every year and grow into those that can compete not only at a conference level, but a national level as well.”

The Golden Eagles host North Dakota in the first round of the FCS playoffs Saturday at 12 pm.
