Monterey Aldermen Approve Codes Director Position

Monterey Aldermen approved adding a codes director position Monday night, ending several years without one.

Mayor Alex Garcia said the proposed salary would be a $15,000 annual salary plus 50 percent of the permit fees the position collects. Alderman Jamie Phillips said the proposed salary would help squeeze the position into the town’s budget.

“I think the permit fees, I think that our 50 percent that we give will go a long way towards paying that salary, so I don’t think we are going to be necessarily out as much a year,” Phillips said. “The full $15,000, cause its revenue that we are not recognizing now.”

Garcia said the approval establishes the position. Alderman Jim Wolfgram said the addition will help the community.

“This is something I’ve been wanting for a long time,” Wolfgram said.

Garcia did not name the person who is interested in the position, but said they are qualified.

“He is certified, and he is currently getting his commercial certification,” Garcia said. “He is less than a year away, which is what they give you.”

Garcia said he should have a contract for the board to approve in January. Garcia said the codes director would still be on track to start sometime in January.
