Saturday marks the 24th Annual Smithville Christmas on the Square, a chance to celebrate community and boost tourism.
Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Suzanne Williams said event is a labor of love, with county officials, volunteers and local businesses pitching in to produce the seasonal occasion.
“Oh it’s a great benefit for small businesses,” Williams said. “I mean they say that they have so many shoppers that night, and just people buying gifts, and a lot of times people are just discovering downtown Smithville for the first time and they see how awesome it is.”
Williams said the customer base for small business in the city is essential. Williams said the state has aided in attracting tourists to the county. Many tourists are interested in seeing the live window displays associated with the event, themed after Christmas movies and culture.
“We were listed, I mean they had Memphis, they had Chattanooga, they had Nashville and they had Pigeon Forge,” Williams said. “And they included Smithville in these top holiday events. So we were so grateful for that.”
Williams said the community appreciates the opportunity to get together and admire the city square, decorated for the holiday season. Williams said carolers sing through the streets, creating a joyful atmosphere.
“It’s such a fun thing for all ages. I mean from the youngest child to the grandparents, it’s just a family friendly, it’s just a fun place to come,” Williams said. “And you just can’t help but smile when you see the lights.”
