Jackson County Commissioners approved work Monday night to repair the damaged roof of the county jail.
Hail from a thunderstorm several months ago caused the problem. Jackson County Sheriff Marty Hinson said repairs are needed.
“Particularly one spot of one of the offices, the bathroom area, it rotted,” Hinson said. “It leaked long enough that it’s rotted out to go through. We got a tarp up over the roof right now to keep the rain and stuff and the elements out tight now during this time of the year.”
There are still questions about whether the county can afford to pay out of pocket for the repairs, as the repairs do not meet the county’s insurance deductible for the jail. The commission will look to find a funding avenue while the project is out for bid.
The action item was not initially on the agenda, but was added at the request of the Building Committee Chairman.
In other business, the commission approved a budget amendment to move funds to purchase a new computer for the Chancery Court. The commission also approved another budget amendment move grant funds for the construction of the boat ramp at Veterans Park in Granville.
The commission approved the notary renewal of Donna Elrod.
The commission set its next full court meeting date for January 26.
