Warren County Pioneers basketball player Chance Whitlock’s development can be measured in inches, pounds and confidence, and all three have trended upward.
Whitlock entered the program standing 6-foot-5, then grew an inch as a freshman and another half inch as a sophomore. Now at 6-foot-7, Whitlock said he has learned how to turn that size into an advantage in the paint and on the defensive end.
But Whitlock’s growth has not been limited to the tape measure. Since beginning his journey with the Pioneers, he has added between 40 and 50 pounds, spending extra time in the gym to become stronger and more physical against opposing big men. Along with his physical development, Whitlock said he is focused on becoming a stronger leader on the floor.
“I want to be louder on the floor,” Whitlock said. “I want to be a more powerful communicator, and I want to lift others up with their positivity.”
Whitlock’s basketball story began early. By the fourth grade, he was already one of the tallest players in his school at 5-foot-7. Whitlock said he liked the sport immediately and committed himself to continuing his development in McMinnville. That early start helped shape his approach to the game, one built on awareness and decision-making.
“I think using logic on the court [has helped me,]” Whitlock said. “I’m a spacial thinker but I can think in a bunch of different ways but I think I can see some things other people may not see.”
That mindset fits well with a Pioneer team that has shown steady improvement this season. Through six games, five have been decided by 10 points or less. Whitlock said that start is a sign of a group learning how to compete together late in games.
“I feel like we play really good as a team,” Whitlock said. “I think if we stay together and have more energy and keep it the same throughout the season, we’ll be really good and have a good postseason as well.”
As the season progresses, Whitlock said he is looking to expand his offensive impact by attacking the rim more consistently and improving as a passer, using his size and court vision to create opportunities for teammates.
