Monterey’s Perdue chicken plant has been sold to a developer who wants to bring new business to Putnam County.
County Mayor Randy Porter said Perdue wanted to close before the end of the year for fiscal reasons. Porter said the developer is looking at a couple of prospects to come in and occupy the building and hire new employees.
“We don’t know exactly yet who it is that has purchased it or what the companies that are looking at it are going to be, but we are excitedly waiting to see what that is and should know something here hopefully in the next three or four weeks,” Porter said.
Porter said now that the plant has sold, Monterey is looking really good right now.
“We are excited that it’s finally in the hands of somebody who wants to do something with it and to bring some new jobs in,” Porter said.
The Chamber, along with county and state officials were involved in the process of trying find an occupant for the plant. Porter said finding an occupant for a plant that size takes time.
“With it already being set up for food processing, you know, you just can’t put anything in it,” Porter said. “And so trying to find the right occupant that could use the building was an issue.”
