The replacement of the HVAC system at Crossville’s Police Department expected to cost about $10,000 more than expected.
City Engineer Tim Begley said the contractor has completed all of the bid items in the original contract. However, Begley said the problem they have run into is that the squad room and the offices are two different areas, but are on the same unit. Begley said they could not accommodate the different temperatures needed for both spaces.
“The solution we came up with was to actually cap the duct off in the squad room and install a mini split,” Begely said. “And that’s what this change order is actually installing a mini split in the squad room.”
The council questioned why it would cost an estimated $10,000 to do a mini split. Begley said it is a tough job to conceal the wires and run them from the electrical room.
“With the system we got, we can’t satisfy both,” Begley said. “And if we try to go in the middle, then nobody is gonna be satisfied.”
The council will also consider a change order for the Miller Avenue Booster Station. The change order will increase the project costs by an estimated $35,500. Begley said the change order comes after unsuitable soils were found just outside the footprint of the booster station.
“It’s in an area that is going to be hard to get back to, and it actually had some groundwater coming up,” Begley said. “And we had to remove those soils and get back in with a french drain so that area would drain mighty soft, which would be right beside the booster station.”
Begley also said the change order includes a change in the driveway. Begley said the driveway was steeper than it appeared on paper and that the contractor felt like there would be issues constructing the booster station due to the steepness. Begley said the Water Authority has agreed with the change order, as they are reimbursing the city for a percentage of the cost.
The third change order the council will consider is for the Peavine Road Force Main Addition. Begley said the project is almost completed. Begley said the change orders to cover a couple of quantities and that it will likely stay within budget. Begley said at this time he does not have an exact number of how much the change order will cost.
Council will meet next Tuesday at 6pm to vote on the change orders.
