A layer of snow falling across the Upper Cumberland overnight and road conditions very icy.
Even in Cookeville where rain was the word Sunday…officials reporting roads slick.
T-DOT has closed Highway 111 over Spencer Mountain due to ice. The Van Buren County Sheriffs Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are on scene due to multiple vehicles already stranded on the mountain.
Interstate 40 closed for several hours Sunday night in Putnam County around mile marker 293. A multi vehicle accident just before 9pm Sunday night. The roadway slick.
Emergency officials in multiple Upper Cumberland counties took to social media late Sunday Night pleading with residents to stay off the roads. In many cases, officials said the roadways look clear, but simply are not. Moisture refroze quickly as temperatures plummeted Sunday evening.
Temperatures this morning starting between 10-14 in most areas of the Upper Cumberland. Though sunshine will return this afternoon….temperatures will struggle to get above 20. The sun will work on the roadways on its own….but the process is going to be slow.
Meantime, the cleanup will be slow in the northeast portion of the Upper Cumberland where long stretches of freezing rain caused issues Sunday. Tri County Electric called the ice storm brutal. More than two thousand residents without power this morning in Clay County alone. Problems even worse in Macon County and areas to the west and north.
At one point Sunday, Tri County estimated more than 33 thousand without power on the system.

The Free Hill area of Clay County one of the hardest hit areas in our region with multiple trees, power lines down. Power could be off for several days. Residents could also be without water.
Clay County 911 reminding residents to please avoid calling 9-11 to ask about power outages as you are tying up emergency lines. Crews are working to get power restored as quickly as possible.
Upper Cumberland Electric showing some 265 customers without power right over the Smith Putnam County line early Monday morning. Scattered outages elsewhere. Volunteer Energy’s map almost clean. This storm all based on where that warm nose of air ended up.
Warming stations are available across the Upper Cumberland if needed as this event will now be a several day cold weather snap. Temperatures tonight will be at our below zero across the region.
