Cumberland School Officials Frustrated With Roads, Closures

Cumberland County Schools will reopen Wednesday, after what officials call a frustrating winter weather event.

Cumberland County Schools Transportation Director Kathleen Martin said the school system has closed the schools for the past two days due to icy roads. Martin said unpaved roads, especially, caused the system concern, because they would not clear.

“It’s been somewhat frustrating,” Martin said. “I mean, it’s always frustrating when we have to close schools and don’t make all the parents happy, but we do it for the safety of the children and the safety of the drivers.”

Martin said road conditions significantly improved on Tuesday, and the school system will reopen on Wednesday. Martin said she hopes parents understand that making a decision to close schools is not an easy decision.

“I would just like for them to understand that we put a lot of effort into our decision,” Martin said. “It’s not something that we do lightly, and we do really want to keep our students safe at all times.”

Martin said the main roads have been in good condition for the past several days. However, Martin said most of the concern was for secondary and unpaved roads.

“This time it had the ice underneath with the snow on top, and then there is also black ice when it starts to melt,” Martin said. “So we take all that into consideration when the decision is made.”

Martin said the transportation department is ready get the kids back in school.
