Walden Setting Tone In Pitching Circle And At Shortstop

From backyard beginnings to becoming one of the most important pieces of the Clay County High School softball program, Baylor Walden’s journey with the Lady Bulldogs has been shaped by family, leadership and a love for the game.

Walden first picked up a softball at six years old while playing travel ball. A few years later, she began playing for her junior high team in sixth grade. The decision to try the sport came with encouragement from her father, who also played softball and helped spark her interest in the game.

Walden said that early introduction eventually turned into a passion she carries every time she takes the field.

“I’m always excited to get out here and play for Clay County High School,” Walden said. “It’s nothing like anything in your life. This is truly the best experience you can have, representing your school and the community, the fans coming out to watch you and support you, it’s truly the best thing. You learn life lessons playing softball here.”

Now entering her senior season, Walden will again take on a major role for the Lady Bulldogs as both a pitcher and shortstop. Walden has become one of Clay County’s most dependable players, contributing both in the circle and in the infield. Earlier in her career, Walden played first and third base before eventually transitioning to pitching and shortstop as she developed her skill set. Walden said pitching provides a chance to control the rhythm of the game.

“I try to own it,” Walden said. “I don’t let the batter take control. I try to set the standard and try to control the tempo of the game.”

Walden said that same mindset carries over when she is stationed at shortstop, where she sees herself as a leader of the infield. Walden said playing the position allows her to stay locked into every moment of the game while helping direct the defense around her.

Beyond the field, Walden said she credits the program’s close-knit atmosphere as one of the most meaningful parts of her high school career.

“I feel we’re a family,” Walden said. “We try to have all sorts of team bonding and then when we go out, we always cheer each other and make sure we have each other’s back.”

Her impact has already been felt across the state. Walden earned Class 1A All-State recognition during her junior season after batting .459 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs while also serving as the Lady Bulldogs’ ace in the circle.

As she prepares for her final season at Clay County, Walden said the lessons she has learned through softball will stay with her long after her playing days are finished. Walden said she hopes to carry the work ethic and discipline she has learned on the field into the next chapter of her life, wherever it may lead.
