Livingston City Council has authorized T-DOT to replace a signal light at the intersection of Main Street and Myers Street.
Livingston Mayor Lori Elder Burnett said T-DOT evaluated the light several months ago and determined that it needed to be replaced. The project allows the municipality to upgrade its infrastructure without spending local tax dollars.
“Well, actually that is something that T-DOT just recognized on our behalf,” Burnett said. “It was an older traffic signal that needed to be replaced and they actually contacted us and they’re offering to replace it and, you know, we met several months ago about that and we just had to, you know, accept their proposal and, you know, put it before council, just recognizing that they are getting ready to start work on that for us.”
The existing traffic signal at the intersection does not currently have any known mechanical issues. Burnett said the state intervention provides a significant financial relief for the local government.
“Yeah, that’s, it’s very exciting and I’m, you know, it’s, it’s great that the state is willing to help on some of those that are, are older signals because those can become quite costly and a lot of times we actually end up, applying for grants for these signals and we do that often as well,” Burnett said.
The state-funded replacement aligns with a broader local initiative to update infrastructure across the municipality. Upgrading the equipment proactively helps prevent future mechanical failures.
“So we’re, we have, we are trying to, you know, modernize, you know, all of our signals around town just to make sure that we, you know, continue to be safe and that we catch any problems before they occur,” Burnett said.
Officials have not yet received an exact date for when the construction will begin. The project is currently slated for the coming years as the state finalizes its schedule.
