Cumberland’s Virgil Smith Road Closing For Road Work

Virgil Smith Road in Cumberland County will close for a week beginning Monday for the installation of a concrete pipe.

The closure is part of the ongoing State Route 28 improvement project stretching from north of Interstate 40 to near Potato Farm Road. Traffic will be detoured at Fredonia Road while crews complete the infrastructure work.

“Drivers traveling near Virgil Smith Road in Cumberland County should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will have an impact on traffic,” the Tennessee Department of Transportation said in a press release.

The road will shut down at 8:00 a.m. on Monday and is scheduled to reopen at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24. Signage will be posted directing drivers through the work zone during the closure. The schedule is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled if unforeseen circumstances arise, the press release said.

“Drivers are encouraged to use caution as they travel through this area and expect significant delays,” the press release said.

Motorists can check travel conditions before departure using the state’s motorist information tools. The department asks drivers to avoid using their phones while behind the wheel.

“Should inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances cause delays, it will be rescheduled to a later date,” the press release said.

The construction zone falls under Tennessee’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violations of this law carry strict penalties for motorists.

“Violation of this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500,” the press release said.
