New White County Convenience Center Set To Open Soon

White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the newly relocated Central View Convenience Center is set to open soon.

The convenience center had been located inside the landfill. It has been closed since November. Robinson said the new facility on Gum Mountain Road will open soon.

“Well, I spoke with the engineer today, actually,” Robinson said. “The construction, I think, Jerry’s pretty much got that done. We are working on a building now for the workers to be in.”

Robinson did not give an estimated timeframe for when the convenience center will open. Robinson said the county is still working on installing utilities at the new site.

“We are gonna need some kind of power for them,” Robinson said. “So we are gonna be back in touch with Caney Fork [Electric] to see if we can get power down there, and then we are either going to have to get some sort of porta-potty or, I will meet with the engineer on Wednesday at 3 pm to see about the septic system.”

Robinson said the original convenience site inside the landfill was closed for safety reasons.

“The solid waste industry is one of the top three or four most dangerous occupations,” Robinson said. “So it was purely for safety to be able to let the citizens come in and out without having to worry about trucks, compactors, and heavy equipment being around them.”

Robinson said Waste Management will be moving more waste than the county was moving when the county operated the landfill. He also said that moving the convenience site will limit interruptions to Waste Management.

In other business, the commission approved a few budget amendments. One of the budget amendments was for an estimated $15,000 donation to the American Legion for elevator repairs. Robinson said the donation is part of a 50/50 match for the Joe and Patricia Snodgrass Charitable Trust.

Another budget amendment added an estimated $63,000 from the state to go toward additional paving. The final budget amendment was to surplus a 2015 Ford Explorer.
