Warren County Pioneer Carter Lee is already known for putting in work on the football field, but this spring, he is taking that same mindset to a new sport in track and field.
Lee said the decision to join the Pioneers’ track team came from a mix of curiosity and confidence.
“I’ve always been, I feel like a decent runner,” Lee said. “I thought it would be a great thing to do to increase my speed and I really like the sport.”
A multi-sport athlete, Lee said he sees track as more than just a way to stay active in the offseason. Lee said the sport is a chance to sharpen key parts of his game that translate directly to football, where he has already made an impact.
“Track was on a different level,” Lee said. “I think it will help me be stronger with my legs and also have different aspects of athleticism and just be a better athlete overall.”
Lee is in his first season with the track and field team after being encouraged by teammates to give the sport a try. Lee said the transition has not been without its challenges. Lee said early practices introduced a new level of intensity and preparation, forcing him to adjust quickly. Lee said that adjustment starts mentally.
“[You have to have a plan] before you go,” Lee said. “[You need to focus on] staying disciplined with what you need to get done.”
Lee said that focus has become a cornerstone of his approach as he learns the ins and outs of the sport. With each meet, Lee is motivated by steady improvement, pushing himself to grow in a new competitive environment.
Lee said his goals are to get faster, compete at a high level and build connections with his teammates along the way. Lee said he is determined to push himself to the limit, not just for personal success, but to contribute to the team as a whole.
As he continues to develop, Lee’s willingness to step in his comfort zone and embrace a new challenge reflects the mindset coaches hope to see from multi-sport athletes. And for the Pioneers, it is another sign of an athlete committed to becoming the best version of himself, one race at a time.
