For Cumberland County High School flag football player Jazmine Tibbs, the path to the flag football field has not been a straight line, but it is one defined by resilience, adaptability, and growth.
Tibbs did not begin her high school career in flag football. Instead, Tibbs said she built her foundation across multiple sports, guided by coaches who left a lasting impact.
“They were all different coaches, yet they had the same idea and the same plan for all their athletes,” Tibbs said. “They would help me excel in all my sports and they would motivate me [and] advise me to do better and be a great athlete.”
Before stepping onto the field, Tibbs spent two years cheering for Cumberland County, developing endurance and discipline through competitive routines. Tibbs said that experience, especially in game day competitions, proved to be more valuable than she initially realized.
“I’ve always been a good runner,” Tibbs said. “I thought flag football would be a great way to get back into shape, and also try something new.”
Her athletic background also included track and field, where she competed in the 100-meter dash and as part of the 4×100 relay team during her freshman year. But after suffering an ACL injury, Tibbs said she was forced to reevaluate her approach to sports.
Drawn by both curiosity and opportunity, Tibbs made the transition to flag football, a decision fueled by her natural speed and desire for a new challenge.
“We had to have a lot of stamina,” Tibbs said. “It definitely helped with my endurance and my stamina for flag football.”
Since joining the Lady Jets, Tibbs has become one of the program’s key contributors, earning All-District recognition while helping Cumberland County emerge as a competitive team in a growing sport.
But adversity struck again. Tibbs is now working her way back from a second ACL tear, an obstacle that would test any athlete’s resolve. Still, Tibbs said her focus remains firmly on her team and what lies ahead.
As Cumberland County continues to build momentum this season, Tibbs has her sights set on more than just a return. She is aiming to help lead the Lady Jets back to the postseason.
