Clay Road Superintendent Resigns, Found Guilty Of Theft

Clay County Road Superintendent Jason Browning resigned on Wednesday after being found guilty on a charge of theft over $10,000.

Browning faced multiple theft and official misconduct charges after an investigation by the comptroller’s office. It found that Browning misappropriated an estimated $57,000 in diesel fuel for his personal transportation business. That totals some 16,200 gallons of department-purchased fuel.

According to court documents, Browning’s resignation comes as part of a plea deal. Included in the deal, prosecutors dropped the official misconduct charges against Browning. Angie Browning has been designated as the interim road superintendent.

Jason Browning had a message along with his resignation letter.

“Please accept this as my formal resignation from the position of Clay County Road Superintendent,” Browning said. “My last day is close of business April 15, 2026. I am grateful for all the support during my time as road superintendent and deeply appreciate everyone. Best wishes and thanks for everything.”
