Overton County Candidates Earn Nod For August Election


Some 23 percent of registered Overton County voters weighed in on three contested county races in Tuesday’s election.

Victoria Looper defeated Angela Ledbetter for the County Clerk nomination with 65 percent of the vote to Ledbetter’s 34 percent. Ledbetter will face no opposition in the general election.

Shawn Gray captured 47 percent of the vote to beat out Derek “Digger” Masters and Tiffany Smith for the County Trustee nomination. And Austin Dodson won the County Executive nod with over 48 percent of the vote share.

District 1 Overton County Commission Democratic candidates Donovan Martin and Robbie Melton will advance to face Independents Nathan Dale, Cindy Robbins and Lacey Savage.

District 2 saw no qualifying Republican or Democratic candidates. Independent candidates on the ballot for August will be James Darwin Clark, Richard Hull, Jeremiah Laycock, Jeff Long, Roy Ogletree, Lori Reagan and Shane Walker.

District 3 Republicans Steven Jordan and Gerald Windle will advance to face Democrat Randy Spencer and Independents Jesse Bowman, Samuel Capehart and Bret Livingston.

District 4 Gail Arney and Scott Deatherage will advance on the Republican ticket to face Independents Chris Barlow, Philip Talley and Geraldine Walker.

District 5 Republican Dewayne Harness will advance to face Independents Roger Carr, Pam Keys, Susie Master and Donna Savage.

Republican Sheriff candidate John Garrett will advance to face Independent Ray Smith in August.

Republican candidate for Register Of Deeds Jimmy Conner will advance to August unopposed.

In the School Board District, no Republican or Democrat candidates qualified. Keri Burnette, Shirley Myers, James Clouse, Sheila Phillips, Jim Nelson Jr, Kyle Bowers and Ashley Carr will all be on the ballot as Independents in August.
