With spring weather in full bloom, more bicyclists are taking to the roadways for exercise, but local law enforcement said following traffic guidelines are key.
From using hands as turn signals to displaying a white light and red rear reflectors, Cookeville Police Sergeant Charlotte Austin said cyclists need to be mindful of the rules when on the road. State law requires cyclists under 16 years old to wear a helmet.
“You have the right to be on the roadway whether there’s a bike lane or not,” Austin said. “But again, you are expected to adhere to all of the roadway laws just as if you were in a vehicle. So that’s speed and that’s changing lanes.”
Austin said she does recommend bicyclists using sidewalks. However, Austin said bikers can clog up the roadways and create unnecessary danger if they are not aware of their surroundings. She said cyclists on the road need to follow the same traffic laws as cars.
“People just cutting traffic off and impeding traffic,” Austin said. “I mean, bicycles, unless they have some sort of motor, are not going to go as fast as a car is. So, they do have the right to be in the roadway, but I think sometimes just impeding traffic and not moving as far right as they can so traffic can get around them.”
Austin said it is important cyclists remember to properly maintain their bikes and ensure the gears and brakes are in full working order before hitting the road, along with proper safety and reflectors.
“You want to make yourself very visible because you’re moving at a slower pace than cars, most of the time,” Austin said. “You do want to wear a helmet, any kind of other safety gear that you feel might be necessary. But just watch out for cars. People get distracted easily. And just keep your head on a swivel.”
