Monterey leadership will utilize $500,000 to enhance safety at Meadow Creek Park with new specialized emergency response equipment and recreational facilities.
Mayor Alex Garcia said he requested the funds from Representative Cameron Sexton to support the ongoing development of the 300-acre park. The proposed improvements also include paving the entrance road and installing a playground featuring an inclusive, ADA-accessible swing.
“We’re going to have a building out there that’s going to house our boat, it’s going to house an electric bicycle, and maybe even an electric dirt bike so we can get out to that person, that patient in a quicker manner,” Garcia said. “It also cuts it down because right now, if something were to happen out there and you have to go get equipment, it’s going to take a first responder way longer to go get that stuff and bring it out there.
Garcia said the park features a 10-mile bike trail where emergency access can be difficult for first responders. The new equipment storage building is designed to ensure help can reach visitors who may become injured deep within the trail system.
Garcia said Meadow Creek Park is a significant attraction for residents of Monterey and beyond.
“In my mind, that’s a gold mine, you know, for adventurers, for people to come out,” Garcia said. “We have a master plan done, and all this stuff that we’re doing is part of the master plan.”
Garcia said the current projects are part of the first phase of a multi-phase vision for the property. Future phases are expected to include deeper park access and the addition of camping sites.
“I want to keep seeing improvements to the park,” Garcia said. “I don’t want it to stop where we’re at now. I want the improvements to continue.”
Garcia said the state budget is typically funded July 1, with the city expecting to receive the allocation approximately one month later. If the board approves the plan at its next meeting, Garcia said construction on the playground could be finished within four weeks of funding, and the storage building could be erected in a few days.
“Meadow Creek is one of the, like I said, I think it’s a rare gem that we have,” Garcia said. “And I think that most people don’t know it’s there. And, you know, it’s very enjoyable.”
