Crossville Fire Station One Upgrades Approved

Crossville City Council approved a renovation and expansion plan for Fire Station Number One Tuesday that includes a six-bay design.

Mayor Pro Tem Art Gernt introduced the measure to advance the construction project at the Henry Avenue facility. The project came in over budget.

“Which is the headquarters as presented with the six bay drawing including the alternate and verifying that all of our utilities coming into that structure will accommodate future needs for any other services whether it be water or gas, and that we proceed forthwith,” Gernt said.

The proposed floor plan adds three upper-level truck bays connected to the existing building. An additional three lower-level bays will serve on a different elevation

The motion passed following a roll call vote, with Council Member James Mayberry casting the lone dissenting vote.

An alternate bid added $148,295 to the budget for radiant heat instead of normal gas heat. Council Member Mark Fox said he had a problem with that specific addition to the budget.

“I think that that’s fine moving forward for the future as Mike said,” Fox said. “I don’t know how critical the extra $148,295 for the radiant heat is over normal gas heat. So I have a problem with that alternate with the additional $148,000 in the budget.”

Other officials supported the full scope of the project to ensure the facility is prepared for long-term use. The expansion is intended to meet the needs of the department well beyond the present day.

“No, I just think that building, the remodeling for the future not just for today tomorrow but for the future which we need to plan for the future,” Council Member Mike Turner said.

The city just opened a brand new station two.
