Gainesboro secured a $91,000 grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission to begin construction on a downtown pocket park.
Roaring River Cultural Alliance’s Valerie Goetz told the Board of Aldermen Thursday the funding will not be enough to complete the park, but rather will complete the first phase.
“We’re gonna need, there’s some, as we discovered walking around, there’s some things that have been left on that lot that need to be removed and a little bit of landscaping that needs to be removed too inside of weeds,” Goetz said.
Goetz said she along with a construction group walked the lot this week to ensure the work would be bid properly. The town already possesses a previous plan for the site formerly held by the chamber, but modifications are necessary to avoid disrupting a sewer line.
The current plan requires making adjustments to the original design while maintaining the main idea for the space.
Goetz said the town will turn the project details back into the Tennessee Arts Commission to receive final approval. The board discussed whether the project would require three separate bids or if they could proceed directly with a selected contractor.
The project must be completed by June of next year.
