The Monterey Board of Aldermen ratified the town’s Private Act Charter amendment during a special called meeting Monday.
The move means the town can begin the process of hiring a City Administrator to oversee the workings of the government. The Aldermen asked the legislature during its spring session to approve the measure, a change to the style of government in place.
Aldermen Kevin Peters and Jamie Phillips cast the dissenting votes against the resolution in a 6-2 vote Monday. Aldermen tabled the proposal earlier this month, wanting to wait on the official documentation from the state.
In other business, Aldermen approved the third and final reading to establish new water rates. Aldermen Cecilia Paulson and Jim Wolfgram voted against the increase.
State officials strongly suggested the rate increase, made more critical by the closure of the Perdue Chicken Plant.
