Overton School Board to Vote on Display of Ten Commandments

The Overton County School Board has scheduled a vote for its next meeting to decide whether to display the Ten Commandments in district schools.

Director of Schools Kim Dillon said the potential displays must follow specific guidelines established by new Tennessee legislation.

“This was a new policy that was passed that we could display it if we chose to, but there’s you have specific things that you have to go by,” Dillon said. “So I wanted you all to have like what the specifics were so that we’ll kind of look into where we need to.”

Dillon said the district does not currently have the Ten Commandments displayed in any of its facilities. Board Member Mike Hayes said the board should move forward with a formal decision during the next monthly session.

“Let’s put on agenda for next month’s meeting to do it,” Hayes said. “I would too.”

Dillon said any decision made by the board would require the displays to be handled consistently across every school location in the county.

“And you have to decide and then they have to be done the same way at every location,” Dillon said.
