Gainesboro officials approved a $5,000 bid to paint City Hall during, sparking a debate over prioritizing aesthetic improvements while critical wastewater infrastructure remains in disrepair.
Alderman Beth Young said the board must consider how the public perceives spending on appearances when essential services face significant challenges. Young said the town needs to evaluate its financial commitments more closely.
“When it comes down to people and they see that we’ve got things that are breaking versus that we’re making things pretty, that’s what I’m thinking about,” Young said. “I think that’s more important than the aesthetics of how a building looks at this point, I mean, I’m being honest, that’s just a much more important thing.”
Mayor Ricky Head said the painting project is necessary because the current structure is deteriorating. Head said the funding for the maintenance work is already established within the budget and originates from a different fund than the one used for water and sewer repairs.
Alderman Tom Goetz said the $5,000 bid for labor and materials is a fair price for the amount of work required on the building. Goetz said the project includes painting two side walls and the window casings, trim, and gutters.
