Sparta officials delayed a vote Thursday night on proposed expansion of YMCA building allowing for legal review of the project contract.
Mayor Jerry Lowery said the board attorney needs to evaluate specific language regarding the ownership of the facility. Lowery said the YMCA secured a grant to fund the addition to the building, which is currently owned by the city.
“Our lawyer looks at to make sure that 10 years down the road they put a million dollars into our building and we decide to sell that building or something changes, who owns it?” Lowery said. “And we’ve not been clear on that.”
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the planned expansion includes office space, a community room, a kitchen, and bathrooms. The new area will also feature rooms designed for teaching instruction and educational classes.
“It’s going to be office space, a community room, a kitchen, bathroom, but both of these are going to be like the teaching instruction classes and then this is going to be like one big class,” Tindle said. “Maybe an education class or something like that.”
The board expects to revisit the contract and the expansion proposal during its next meeting scheduled for November 5.
“There’s they’re adding onto our building,” Lowery said. “We own the building and they’ve got a grant to add onto that building and we just going to make sure that our lawyer looks at there’s part of it.”
In other business, the board approved the purchase of a 2026 Silverado 1500 for $36,000 and a 2026 Silverado 3500 equipped with a crane and Tommy Gate for the Sewer Department. Officials also authorized the $340,000 purchase of a 2026 HV-607 aerial truck for the Electric Department and awarded a $39,400 bid to Yoder’s Roofing for repairs.
