Algood Fortifies Disaster Readiness With Standby Power

Algood receiving new emergency generators for its senior center and city hall as part of a countywide initiative to provide reliable backup power during disasters.

UCDD Assistant Director of Planning and Community Development Marcie Ackerman said the project originated from a need for larger facilities to house displaced residents. The plan involves establishing designated emergency sites in Algood, Cookeville, Baxter, and Monterey to improve accessibility for citizens.

“When the tornado hit in 2020, we realized that the county didn’t have a facility large enough to house people that would get displaced,” Ackerman said. “So Mayor Porter went out and designated a couple areas throughout the county to where it would make it easier for people to go.”

Ackerman noted that county maintenance staff and employees will handle the installation work once the equipment is delivered.

“We’re just excited to get the contract,” Ackerman said. “It’s been a long time coming and I know the mayors are eager to get started.”

The terrain in areas like Monterey makes it difficult for residents to travel during severe weather, necessitating localized shelters.

While the final contract amount is not yet official, the installation process is expected to move quickly once the paperwork is finalized.

The funding involves a combination of state funds and a small match from the county. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reached an agreement to split the match costs, Ackerman said.

“This grant was submitted originally in 2023,” Ackerman continued. “It’s a slow-moving process with TEMA, so when tornadoes hit, and hurricanes, all that kind of pushes other projects down the scope.”
