Monterey Requests Proposals For $500,000 Park Trail Expansion

Monterey seeking construction proposals for a trail expansion project at Meadow Creek Park that would create a continuous loop around the lake.

Alderman James Wolfgram said the town is working with the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association on plans to expand the trail system, including a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, new signage and improvements to existing trails.

“There’s currently about six miles of trails completed with an additional five miles to be constructed to complete a loop around Meadow Creek Park at the lake at Meadow Creek Park,” Wolfgram said, “Most folks know the state of Tennessee grant is a $500,000 grant to complete this.”

Wolfgram said the town received the $500,000 state grant through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. He said the project will also bring existing trails up to newer construction standards.

During discussion, a board member questioned why an earlier project estimate of approximately $247,000 differed from the $500,000 now available.

Town officials explained that the larger figure represents the state grant award, not an increase in an approved construction contract. They said the town intends to maximize the improvements completed with the available funding rather than return unused grant money.

Officials said the proposals will help determine how much additional trail work, landscaping and erosion control can be completed within the grant amount.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved issuing the request for proposals Monday. No contractor has been selected, and the town has not approved a final construction price.

Wolfgram said the project has a target completion date of approximately August 2027.
