Red Matthews Wins Overton County Special Election

Republican Michael “Red” Matthews captured the unexpired District 1 seat on the Overton County Commission Tuesday, defeating two independent candidates.

Unofficial election results show Matthews received 600 votes, or nearly 58 percent of the total. Independent Lacey Savage finished second with 260 votes, while independent Beth Officer received 174 votes.

Matthews received 247 votes in one precinct, 15 in another and 338 in the third. Savage received 109, four and 147 votes, respectively.

The special election filled an unexpired term on the County Commission rather than a full four-year term. Former District 1 Commissioner Lee Richards resigned in late 2024, and the commission subsequently appointed Nathan Dale to fill the vacancy.

A total of 1,036 votes were cast in the District 1 race, including two write-in votes. Matthews defeated Savage by 340 votes.

The results remain unofficial pending certification by the Overton County Election Commission.
